Should you put a photo on your resume?
A photograph, date of birth and a declaration line are standard on Indian resume templates and a liability on applications abroad. What to keep, and where.

Almost every free resume template circulating in Indian colleges has a photo box in the corner, a personal details block with date of birth and marital status, and a declaration at the bottom. Students assume these are required. They are not, and whether they help depends entirely on where you are applying.
Applying within India
A photograph is common and generally harmless, particularly for client-facing, hospitality, aviation and some sales roles where it is expected. For a software, finance or analytics role, it is neutral at best. It uses space that could carry evidence, and it does not make you more employable.
The declaration line is a leftover from government and academic application forms. It carries no legal weight on a resume and no recruiter is looking for it. The personal details block, with date of birth, father's name, marital status, nationality and passport number, is the same story. None of it helps a hiring decision, and a public document is not the place for it.
Applying to Europe, the UK or North America
Here it changes from unhelpful to actively risky. Many employers in these markets will not consider a resume carrying a photograph, date of birth or marital status, because holding that information before an interview exposes them to discrimination claims. Some applicant tracking systems strip images automatically; some recruiters delete the file rather than review it.
- No photograph.
- No date of birth, age, gender, marital status, nationality or family details.
- No passport or identity numbers of any kind.
- No declaration line and no signature.
- City and country only, not a full postal address.
- State your work authorisation plainly in one line if you need sponsorship. Leaving a recruiter to guess usually ends with them skipping the file.
Explain your qualifications for the reader
A hiring manager in Berlin or Toronto may not know how to place a B.E. or a CGPA of 8.4. Say that the degree was a four-year programme and give the grading scale, for example 8.4 of 10. It costs half a line and removes the guesswork.
The same applies to language claims. German at intermediate level means nothing on its own. Goethe-Zertifikat B2, with the year, is a fact a recruiter can act on. If you have a certificate, name it and name the body that issued it.
